Save KPLU Campaign Update: April 7

Dear Friends,

We started last week with a $500K listener challenge and, with your help, met it in only 8 days. That pushed us over the halfway mark. Thank you!

Now we’re in the homestretch. We only have a little over 12 weeks left to raise the money to buy our license and become an independent radio station. Your help is more important than ever — now is the time to give at

Remember what’s at stake: the loss of a 16-person independent newsroom, a 12-person jazz and blues staff, and decades of deep experience in journalism and jazz education. You can download the case for support here.

It was great to see so many supporters at the community meeting in Seattle last Thursday — lots of great questions and suggestions.

Our next community meeting is in Olympia on Wednesday April 13th from 7 to 8:30 p.m. You can find details on the KPLU calendar page. We want to thank KAOS Community Radio for helping to organize this meeting.

Thanks to everyone who came out to Mioposto Pizzeria locations on Tuesday. Mioposto donated 30 percent of their sales to the campaign — we raised over $4,000! Thanks Mioposto!

And today through Saturday, Bake’s Place in Bellevue is donating all cover charges to the campaign. JP Hennessy, featuring KPLU’s very own John Kessler, performs tonight at 8:30. Your MC is KPLU’s Midday Jazz host Robin Lloyd. The cover is $20. (Have a drink and some food, too!) Details here.

The full list of Save KPLU events is here.

May 3rd is GiveBIG day! The Seattle Foundation will stretch the dollars you give to the Save KPLU campaign through their website. In addition, a group of donors has created a challenge pool to stretch your dollars even further! We’ll have more details on how you can help in next week’s note.

The Save KPLU campaign accepts gifts from Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA). However, due to Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations regarding the taxation of these accounts, Friends of 88-5 FM prefers that you make a pledge and only fulfill your gift through your IRA when we are certain of making the campaign goal. If a pledge is fulfilled from an IRA account before that time, and the campaign isn’t successful, refunding that gift may have tax consequences.

The deductibility of the gift is subject to general limitations set forth in the tax code and regulations applicable to gifts to 501(c)(3) exemption organizations.

If you would like to make a gift through an IRA please contact Mary Dunaway or at 253-535-7266 for additional information.

Coldwell Banker Bain Sales Associates and KPLU fans Hanafi Libman and David Snead have reached out to get the Save KPLU campaign involved in their community partnership program. Each time a KPLU member, supporter, friend or relative of a member buys or sells a home with Hanafi or David and their teams, Coldwell Banker Bain will donate an amount equal to 10 percent of their commission to Friends of 88.5.

To find out more about this partnership, please contact or 800-677-5758.

Thanks for your support.
