This past 4th of July was an extra special holiday for Friends of 88.5 FM as we celebrated both Independence Day and making a big step towards our own independent future. You can read more about this milestone here.
ASSIGNMENT OF LICENSE
We are progressing through the FCC application process and expect to assume ownership of the station sometime this fall.
THANK YOU OPEN HOUSES
This month, Friends of 88.5 will kick off a series of free summer and fall events to thank you for helping make 88.5 YOUR newly-independent, community station. Meet staff and fellow 88.5 fans, enjoy great food and drink, and listen to live music! It’s gonna be a fun time and we hope you can join us at either of these two locations coming up:
We’ve had a lot of supporters ask if we will continue using the same KPLU call letters once we become independent. Know that 88.5 FM must select new call letters and we want to hear your suggestions. We will post a link with the FCC’s available list of call letters soon. If we choose your suggestion, you’ll be the first to read the new call letters live on the air! Stay tuned for more information and start thinking of what you think the new calls should be for 88.5 FM.
88.5’s FINANCIAL FUTURE
There have also been many questions about whether 88.5 will be able to operate independently, without the support of a major institution like PLU. The answer is YES. Many public radio stations have experienced similar transitions. One of the biggest and most successful was WNYC in New York, which was owned by the city of New York. Locally, KEXP is an incredible success story. It was owned by the University of Washington and also transitioned into an independently-owned powerhouse.
So what about us? How are we going to make the transition?
We have prepared a detailed explanation of 88.5’s budget through the transition and beyond. You can download it here.
Two of the most-asked questions are: Do you still need support? And will you have a fund drive in the fall?
The answers are, again, YES and YES. Your support of Friends of 88.5 will help fund the transition to an independent station.
There will definitely be a fall fund drive, and it will be a celebration of our independence. We will communicate more as we get closer.
Thank you for your continued support!
